Utopians change houses every ten years so that no one accumulates too many goods. If there is no private property, and everything is communal living, there is no reason to store up goods, especially if one changes houses every ten years. The benefit of this is that people do not covet their neighbor’s things, and that they are not greedy in what they store up, because it will all be gone in a matter of time. It prevents people from becoming hoarders, and does not allow them to accumulate mindless garbage that they will never use. Since nothing is private, there is also very little theft, and people are welcome everywhere as the doors are always open to all newcomers into the society.
