Al Capone During the 1920’s the government was cracking down on the distribution of alcohol, they thought that banning alcohol would reduce crime rates, unfortunately the opposite. Men like Al Capone rose to power and sold alcohol, even though it was banned. Al Capone and many others like him started participating in organized crime. In the process of Al Capone rising to power he made allies and enemies. Al Capone was historically significant, because his childhood highly affected his actions as an adult. He became a well-known mobster during the 1920s, he made almost $100 million annually, and he eventually went to jail for tax evasion. Al Capone was born on January 17, 1899. His real name was Alphonse Capone. He lived with his mother, father and eight siblings. His family was poor and came to America for a better life. He gained his money by participating in organized crime. The first encounter with the cops was getting pulled over for drunk driving. Capone was under the influence and hit a parked taxicab, this is when he got arrested for the first time. When Torrio found out that Capone was arrested he got his city government connections to let him off the hook. In 1923 Torrio and Capone moved their base beyond city limits, after the city of Chicago elected a reformist mayor who planned to get rid of all city corruption. “But a 1924 mayoral election in Cicero threatened their operations. To ensure they could continue doing business, Torrio and Capone initiated an intimidation effort on the day of the election, March 31, 1924, to guarantee their candidate would get elected.”(A&E). To make sure their candidate would get enough votes they had some of the opposing candidate’s voters shot and killed.
