1. Why India was called the “Jewel of the crown”?
India was called the “Jewel in the crown” because it was the most valuable country. India had a lot of raw materials that Great Britain could use. India also had a very large population of over 300 million people. This would allow the British to open up a new trade market that could be extremely profitable. If British owned the land, they could tax the people of India and gain a profit for themselves. One of the main reason why it was called that was because it opened up trade to other parts of Asia. What was true of direct control?
Direct control was a method used by French control where the French would try and make the colony they governed adapt to their customs and culture. The French had no middle man, and the government of France directly controlled everything in the colonies. They gave the people of the colony no rights and profit. These people were basically slaves to the French.
7. What is the goal of an indirect control?
Indirect control was a type of management that the British used. The British would train a man to know how to rule a small population and then send him to that colony. This man would make all of the decisions for the British like how to spend the money in the colony, which buildings to build, and how much to tax them. After all of the profit was made from the people of the colonies, he would collect the money and send it out back to the home land. He also could control the trade and manage where all of the goods shipped to.

Vietnam was governed by direct control by the French government. The French controlled most all of their colonies like this because it allowed them to eliminate the middle man or trained
