Music is a big deal now a days. You have jazz, bluegrass, hawaiian, gospel. They are all very popular. You also have many different types of theater. Dancing is also now becoming more popular than it was before the war. Many people have different opinions about music, theater, and dancing.
King Oliver is one of the first jazz singers to become known. He was born and raised in
Louisiana. When he was a young kid a became blind in one eye. In his teenage years he became a butler for a white family. Being a butler never really clicked with him, music just stood out to him. He started getting into playing the cornet when he was sent to Colored Waif’s Home for Boys and received musical instruction. After being sent home he worked different jobs, selling newspapers and hauling coal to the city, dreaming of making music. He began earning the reputation of a fine blues player. King Oliver helped mentor him, showing him how to play the cornet even better. King Oliver even started using him as a sub if he needed him. Louis Armstrong joined King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band playing the cornet. He went to New York and had a role in Broadway’s Connie’s Hot Chocolates. He is not afraid to experiment with different types of music like Hawaiian, gospel, bluegrass, jazz of course, and many other different types of music. Dancing is becoming very popular in night clubs. While people are dancing they are consuming illegal alcohol or after hour sales from Britain. Women are frequently going to nightclubs These women are being called The Good Time Girls. Party groups are going from one club to another. In the clubs they are going from one dancer to another dancing different dances. There are no teachers teaching you how to dance, you learn how to dance by watching movies like Running Wild. You can also have your friends teach you how to dance if they know how to dance. For most jobs you have to know how to dance the Charleston. If you don’t know what the Charleston is it is a dance that is typically done by oneself or with one other person. It is made up of a couple small sets of steps. If you cannot do these steps, then you will not be able to do the Charleston. Bosses want you to be able to dance the Charleston for most any job.
