Slavery was such a contentionus issue that it had already divided the nation. Slavery was also a sectional issue between the North and South. The question of the protection of the rights of slave ownersand if they would be protected in the south but also in the north, and if slavery should be allowed in the newly acquired territories, or if slavery should be abolished altogether in the South, these were issues that neither the North nor the South could agree on.
