Why We Should Dress Codes Be Allowed In Schools Essay

A person’s way of dressing can usually express what they feel, especially in young adults. Other times it can be because of a religion or a background. It is the right of a school to make laws concerning the safety of their students, but “they must do so without violating the constitutional rights of students” (Reuters). In 1969 the very first dress code law was established by the US Supreme Court in the case known as Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District. Several high school students wore black armbands to school as a way of protesting against the Vietnam War. Although dress code is meant to protect students in a learning environment, it can also limit their freedom of speech and how they identify themselves. As a teenager, clothing is a very large role in your life. After all, your style portrays your personality and the crowd that you hang out with.

They are demanding to be treated with fairness — as more than the sum of their body parts and more than a classroom distraction to boys. School leaders are doing all they can to control (and stop) this. “Administrators are punishing girls with detention, public humiliation, expulsion, and mandatory assemblies, which distracts from the female students education” (Mahlmeister). Take note of 15-year old Miranda Larkin, a sophomore at Oakleaf High School in Orange, Park Florida who was dress coded on only her 3rd day at school. She was “forced to wear a school-mandated outfit after an infraction of the policy” (MTV News). She had to wear a neon t-shirt with the words “Dress Code Violation” in capital letters, along with a pair of red sweatpants with the same phrase down the legs, humiliating her.
In conclusion, dress code should be banned because girls shouldn't have to feel like they have to hide their bodies in order for others to learn. They also shouldn't have to fear being objectified by
