Steroids are something that runs ramped throughout gyms and sports. There are high schoolers who take steroids to try and get ahead of other people who are on the same team as them. People take steroids to try and get ahead of other people and they are taking the easy way out. They do not want to actually work for it and get bigger on their own, so they take steroids to do that. I do not think these people ever think of the side affects of taking steroids can do to them. They never see the long-term effect of taking steroids, they just are looking at the short-term gain. Steroids is something that is banned by all sports. Even though steroids are banned in most all major sports there are athletes who still take them. My thought is why take …show more content…

“Anabolic steroids are used to build up muscle. Corticosteroids are used to dampen overactive immune responses and reduce swelling” (DeNoon, Daniel). The anabolic steroids that are used by athletes are synthetic versions of testosterone, which is a male hormone. When taking these steroids your testosterone will increase and when you get your testosterone out of balance there is a wide range of problems that can be experienced. Doctors prescribe anabolic steroids to treat certain specific medical conditions. For example, they may be used to treat the muscle wasting seen in AIDS. Many people will take steroids in different ways to try and avoid the side effects of taking steroids. Cycling is taking doses for a period of time, stopping for a time and restarting. Stacking is combining two or more steroids or more. Pyramiding slowly increasing the dose of frequency of abuse, reaching a peak amount, and then gradually tapering off (Anabolic Steroids). Scientist cannot prove that taking steroids this way can reduce the effects that steroids have on you. “Anabolic steroids work differently from other drugs of abuse; they do not have the same short-term effects on the brain. The most important difference is that steroids do not trigger rapid increases in the brain chemical dopamine, which causes the "high" that drives people to abuse other substances. However, long-term steroid abuse can act on some of the same brain pathways and chemicals—including dopamine, serotonin, and opioid systems—that are affected by other drugs. This may result in a significant effect on mood and behavior” (Anabolic Steroids). People can and do abuse steroids and they will continue too and they do not think that about the effects of the steroids. Steroids are often injected, and they use nonsterile needles or
