Why We Shouldn T Read Shakespeare's Plays

215 Words1 Pages
World renowned author William Shakespeare wrote a plethora of exceptional plays, but we shouldn’t read any of them in the remaining weeks of school. Although his works may be remarkable, studying one would disrespect his intentions for them. Ian McKellen--a former actor in multiple Shakespearean plays--specifies that these “‘plays weren't written to be read, they were written to be spoken out loud and acted and for us as an audience to watch’” (Moreton). Shakespeare didn’t intend for anyone--besides actors--to review his scripts. He wanted audiences to watch his shows...not scrutinize them. Some argue that despite his wishes to have his plays acted out rather than read, analyzing them can improve students’ understanding of the English language.
