Colonial History There are many different theories about why the colonies were founded. All 13 colonies were divided into 3 categories: New England Colonies, Middle Colonies, and Southern Colonies. The New England colonies had 4 colonies; Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Massachusetts was founded in 1629, used for religious freedom, Connecticut was founded 1939 and was ruled by Thomas Hooker. New Hampshire was founded in 1638 and Puritans moved from Massachusetts to “live free or die”. Rhode Island was founded 1644 by Roger William and he believed that we should pay Indians for “using” their land . Virginia founded in 1607 was named after queen Virginia and Captain John Smith discovered that tobacco can grow in viginan soil; became their cash crop that saved Virgina. Maryland was founded in 1632 and was the home of The Act Of Toleration; gave all walks of life worship freedom. From what I have learned, colonies were founded because countries wanted more money, land, and some people wanted religious freedom. Colonial Economy Depending on what the colonies were in search of, some colonies were forced to live certain places but some went willingly.The geography and climate impacted the trade and economic activities of New England Colonies. In the New England settlements along the coast, the colonists lived their by fishing, whaling, and shipbuilding. The fishing varieties consisted of cod, mackerel, herring, halibut, hake, bass and sturgeon. In the Middle Colonies, the economy was very diverse. The climates were very warm and moist.
