While on a pilgrimage, the Wife of Bath along with many others shared stories and tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales. The pilgrims each told a tale so they had fun on their trip and did not sit around and do nothing the whole way. The Wife of Bath told the sixth tale. In The Canterbury Tales, The Wife of Bath shows characteristics of a fraud. The Wife of Bath manipulated all of her husbands, shows arrogance and selfishness, and had many improper actions and was sexually immoral.
The Wife of Bath manipulated her husbands and lied to obtain her wants and needs. “Yet I tickled his heart because he thought I had such great fondness for him” (Chaucer 395), shows the Wife of Bath manipulating her husband. While trying to make her husband think she cared, the Wife of Bath showed immoral character and manipulated every husband she had. Another quote, “I governed them so well by my rules that each of them was blissful and glad to bring me beautiful things from the fair”(225), shows how she thought she owned her husbands. Alisoun, the Wife of Bath, shows self-importance and does not let anybody talk her down. On line 162, the Wife of Bath states, “As long as I live I, and not he have the power over his body.” Alisoun not only thought very highly of herself, but also thought she owned her husbands. Alisoun showed arrogance by acting like the world should revolve around her.
