Several studies have been conducted to characterize the lasting impacts that wildfires have had on water quality. The Rough Fire that occurred in California during the summer of 2015, was an intense fire and one of the largest that the state has had recently. Since the proposed project is to quantify the degree to which the Rough Fire impaired water quality in the affected area, several water quality parameters will be examined. It has been shown that sediment loads, erosion, and nutrient inputs increase after intense wildfires and that the temperature of water may increase and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels may decrease. To understand the degree to which water quality impairment has occurred in the affected Rough Fire area, four water quality
They can be natural, accidental, incendiary, or undetermined. Natural fires can begin because of nitrogen levels in soil, lightning strikes, or dry conditions. Accidental fires are caused by situations such as gas leaks or candles being left burning. Incendiary fires are set on purpose with the intention to cause damage or death. Many times these are fueled by flammable liquids such as gasoline.
McCombie states that usually the short term effects of wildfires are overlooked, saying “Turkey nests were wiped out and adult birds dispersed” (8). The author gives this as an example because this is a short term effect in the environment that can affect the long term because of the population size being decreased. It is also said that, “… fawns are such hiders that if a fire comes through, it can kill them where they lie” (McCombie 8). This lets the readers know that many fawns are killed during these fires because they hide and don’t know to get up. McCombie uses a great deal of pathos to effectively get his readers to feel unhappy about this
In paragraph 13, the author stated , “the summer had been unusually dry. Between July and October only a few scattered showers had taken place and did not produce much water at all.”. A severe drought could have led to this fire. An area suffering from drought is more likely to have a fire because the environment is dry and has no moisture which can make dried leaves and sticks the perfect fuel. Also, in paragraph 13, the author writes, “What made Sunday different and particularly dangerous was the steady wind blowing in from the southwest.
Alaska wildfires have consumed nearly 5 million acres after a lightning storm in June sparked around 300 fires. An Undying Fire Thanks to the Ice: How Permafrost Affects Wildfires The amazing part about Alaskan wildfires is the very thing that makes them so harmful, which is the fact that they don’t die out when the flames stop above the ground. Instead, the fires have a large resource of dried, dead organic material waiting underground to be burned away.
Wild fires can happen where droughts occur and there are sufficient dry combustibles in the form of foliage, but they are more common in certain areas of the country, so check the records first. Research about other natural hazards, but keep in mind there is no property immune from certain occurrences but you have to know the frequency of the most common ones. Fifth Concern: Security and
The fires get started with kerosene and a source of fire. In Modern American Society the fire trucks hold water, axes, etc. Since 451 firefighters start fires, the fire trucks hold kerosene to potentially start the fire. In 2015, Modern American Society has had 365,500 fires that first responders
Forest fires are uncontrolled fires in nature. They happen all over the world. Forest fires may be beneficial to many organisms in the environment. Forest fires burn the smaller, weaker, and low growing plants. This allows the other plants to grow healthier, without smaller ones using up their resources.
Natural disasters like floods, in mountains floods can result in heavy rain or sudden snow melts. Fires, can be started by lightning, human carelessness, or arson, and can spread very rapidly. Winter storms; you need to pay attention to weather forecasts in your area and stay at home if possible until roads are clear, downed electrical wires are cleared, and services restore. Hurricanes and tornadoes, West Virginia is not a typical hurricane or a tornado path, however, very high wind sometimes with heavy rain, can create emergency conditions. As said in
The North Valley fire was one of the most destructive wildfires to ever burn the state of California. It started september 12 in Lake County, Califorinia a community 100 miles north of the city of San Francisco. The fire began around 1:00 pm in the afternoon,by 6:00 it already destroyed more than 10,000 acres. Entire towns and thousands of residents along a 35-mile stretch of State Route 29 were forced to evacuate, many running as the fire came down the hill toward their homes. California fire spokesman Dan Berlant said “wind gusts that reached up to 30 miles per hour sent embers raining down on homes and made it hard for firefighters to stop the blaze from advancing” .This
Flames wane and flicker, similar to the lives of the survivors. The ability to live on exists in carrying the fire. In contrast, the flames of a fire is a delicate art, something that may bring destruction if not carefully handled. Just as it brings warmth and life, fire brings death as well. Fire brings warmth to those who stay close to its flames, but will burn those who touch it.
From Native Americans cooking their food over fire to present day improper disposal of cigarettes these all have the potential to start a wildfire. Especially if they are done in area that contains dry brush and vegetation due to its drought ridden state like the Mojave. Human interaction and development within the Mojave most likely is a definite player in the role of increased
This past month, the Pacific Northwest has been on fire. Wildfires in this area have been devastating to families, firefighters, ranchers, animals, and so many others. While firefighters fight viciously to contain these fires, there is another war that is going on at the same time; integrity in media. During these fires, newspapers and various news stations supplied the public with half-truths and exaggerations.
There is a debate about using prescribed fires. Prescribed fires are fires that help reduce the catastrophic damage that wildfire creates. prescribed fires work most of the time, but they can be faulty at some points. That's why some people don't agree with using prescribed fires. Even though they sometimes don't work, they can be really helpful when they do work.
California has one of the most severe wildland fire problems in the world. Population, vegetation, topography, and climate all play key roles in the probability of a wildfire occurring. In other words, it’s not a matter of “if” a wildfire will occur, but it’s a matter of “when.” In California, more and more people are choosing to live in communities near wildlands. These wildlands are composed of highly flammable vegetation which can be explosive.
