The Ghost of King Hamlet confirms to young Hamlet that it was by King Hamlet’s brother’s hand that his life, wife, and crown were stolen. This portrays the greedy nature of Claudius even more through his immoral plan and action to betray one of the people closest to him. He pretends to have love for young Hamlet while sending him off to be killed. While also he lets his wife drink a goblet of wine he knows is poisoned, since he “loves” his wife and would rather see his wife die than risk ruining his plans of killing Hamlet. But Claudius then gets a taste of his own medicine because Hamlet ran him through with a sword and then makes him drink the rest of the poisoned wine. But besides the fact of King Hamlet’s Ghost trying to get revenge, his ghost could also be coming from hell because young Hamlet damages himself by over-thinking the intentions of his father’s ghost.
And instead of Claudius going insane with his own guilt, like Macbeth, Hamlet began to go insane with the thought of Claudius’s guilt. Hamlet set out to seek revenge and did all he could to bring Claudius’s guilt to light in the best way. This is what he spent the entirety of the play doing. The ghost got revenge on Claudius for both stealing his throne and marrying his wife, simply by telling Hamlet to pursue revenge, which he did. Hamlet reminded Claudius of his guilt by putting on a play that relayed the exact way that Claudius killed the King.
The theme of revenge of is prevalent in the movie and the paly. In the movie Hamlet the Prince of Denmark seeks out the revenge for his father who was suspected to be murdered. In the conclusion of the movie the Queen of Denmark has been poisoned by her own husband by accident, and the unsuspecting Hamlet seek the treachery. In the movie Hamlet, Hamlet discovers the murderer of his mother and his father while comforting his mother during her final minutes. When revealed the true murder he stabs the current King, his step-father, and proclaims of all to hear “Here, thou incestuous, murderous, damned Dane, Drink off this potion.
While reading this play, several themes seem to make their way to the forefront. These themes include madness, family, and mainly, revenge. Revenge takes center stage because it is the reason all of the events take place. Revenge causes the characters in Hamlet to act blindly through anger and emotion, rather than through reason. The characters base their thought process on the principle of “an eye for an eye” even if it is not the best way.
One of the themes that stands out more than any other theme in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is revenge. The instance that is most obvious, is when Hamlet seeks to make wrong things right in the murder of the king, his father. Two other characters, Fortinbras and Laertes, are also out to get revenge. All three sons wanted revenge due to a murdered father.
All revenge tragedies have a ghost, and in Hamlet’s play it is the ghost who asks for revenge. The prince of Denmark, Hamlet is motivated by his father’s ghost to avenge his father’s death. In William Shakespeare’s tragic play Hamlet, we see a deadly chain of events pass on from one character to another. As children, most people are taught to forgive and forget mistakes. We must not let pettiness overbear rational thoughts and to not hold grudges against one another. The necessity for revenge was the main cause of most of the fatalities among the characters in the play. Shakespeare uses the theme of revenge to showcase the inability to grant forgiveness and move on.
Throughout literature, authors use various methods to intensify the tension in their writings. One method authors employ is the use themes to introduce the main point or concept of the story. In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Shakespeare uses the concept of revenge to resemblance and reflect the moral, social, spiritual, political, and personal dilemmas of the characters. The reoccurring theme of revenge, cause the characters in Hamlet to act aimlessly through emotion and anger, rather than through reason or a purpose.
From the opening scene it is obvious that Hamlet is a play that will be centered around revenge. There are clear indications that show the revenge driven by every character in this play. From the thoughts of the characters to the actual actions consummated by them, revenge is the focal point for them in this play. Hamlet must avenge his father’s death, Laertes must do the same for his father, and Claudius is there to add ammunition to the already blazing fire of revenge felt by these characters. This play is clearly full of revenge, but it is not a traditional revenge play.
Throughout the play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the pursuit of revenge leads to a tragedy and the fall of many. With his judgement clouded with anger, Hamlet made many wrong decisions that led to the downfall of his family and his plan to seek revenge for his father’s death. With the lack or reason used in his plan, due to his anger, led to the deaths of many of the characters. Revenge is one of the themes of this play and revenge is the reason why this is classified as a tragedy and the reason why everyone is dead. Due to the patriarchs of each family passing away, all of their children wanted to extract revenge on those they believed killed their fathers.
In the play “Hamlet” written by William Shakespeare, the theme of revenge is repeated throughout the plot. Revenge is shown in almost all the scenes and affects the whole story. In Hamlet we see the metaphor eye for an eye; the character shows revenge through rage and emotion, instead of rationalization. Fortinbras, Laertes, and Hamlet all wanted to even the score for their father’s deaths.
