Gentrification is the process of improving a struggling neighborhood for affluent people. One of the main causes of this shown by Kelefa Sanneh’s article “Is Gentrification Really a Problem?” , is the real estate market. Things that affect the value of something in a certain neighborhood can end up having a direct influence in all of the neighborhood and can lead to gentrification. The construction of a luxury apartment building can attract more businesses and in turn, more high-quality living spaces which could eventually displace someone living three blocks away.
In the passage “The Penguin Whisperer”, Guy Stewart uses the penguins as a means to reveal characteristics of both Candace and Dejario. Through interactions with the penguins, the author clearly shows Dejarios love for penguins and how Candace is a mean scientist. Throughout the passage the author shows how Dejario treats the penguins as pets and learns how to adapt through their harsh environments to remain alive. Although Dejario treats the penguins as pets, Candace thinks he is childish and just thinks of the penguins as an experiment. The penguins play an important role in revealing the characteristics of both Candace and Dejario in the passage by making Candace mean and Dejario playful .
In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America.
Book Analysis- The Devil in the White City The Chicago World’s Fair continues to be one of America’s defining moments. This is where America proved to the world they had grown up and were able to hold their own. Erik Larson eloquently illustrates the entire fair in little black words on paper. Although he was not alive during this event, Larson is able to reconstruct the story with factual events; he created twists to keep you ensnared into the story.
The First Decision Reef, the main character in the novel, The First Stone, by Don Aker, makes a bad decision and ultimately has to deal with the consequences. To begin, Reef latches his anger onto a stone and deliberately throws it over an overpass into oncoming traffic. The stone causes a major accident between not one, but several cars and severely injures a teenage girl. Fortunately for Reef, the Judge sentences him to live at North Hills Group Home, and to volunteer at a rehabilitation centre. This punishment changes Reef’s life for the better.
“The Glass Castle” is a biography, drama written by Destin Daniel Cretton; it portrays a young girl (Jeanette Walls) and her family as they struggle in poverty stricken towns with a mother who is an eccentric artist and her alcoholic father who she blindly puts her faith in. The film was released on August 11, 2017 and features Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts among others. The big question, “What do I think about “The Glass Castle” film? The film was dissatisfying overall, I did not feel same emotional attachment that I felt with the book. They did not show enough of Jeanette and Rex’s connection to each other.
These various qualities significantly make an impact towards the character, causing isolation and aloneness. Although as a child he experienced happiness and joy which leads to hope that one day he can discover contentment
The Chicago World’s Fair, also known as the World’s Columbian Exposition, was a world renowned fair hosted by the city of Chicago in 1893. The fair was hosted to glorify the legacy of explorer Christopher Columbus, as the world celebrated the four hundredth anniversary of his discovery of the New World. The events leading up to and during the fair are showcased in precise detail in Erik Larson’s bestseller The Devil in the White City, a nonfiction book written about the World’s Columbian Exposition. Early in the book, the idea to host a fair for Columbus is mentioned.
John Biewen, the author of Scene on Radio for his series, ‘The Land That Never Has been Yet’ made this series to talk about different historical events that relate to U.S. democracy. Biewen retells events about democracy in the United States in his own insight that they are glories and full of flaws. Episode 2 of this series recounts a specific historical event with the purpose of interpreting how U.S. citizens used their hardship as an opportunity to demand a better life. This historical event is Shay’s rebellions. Throughout the episode, John Biewen uses different rhetorical modes like example, narration, and ethos to broad out his insights of this event.

The author portrays the mental limits of humans when we look at the character Ryan. Ryan at the beginning of the story was just a normal teenager, but at the end of the book he turned into a murderer.
“Equus” proves to be a timeless drama that delves into the darkest depths of human life. The concepts of adoration and praise are intimately related in “Equus”. Religious identity is the driving force of Peter Shaffer’s literary work. Throughout the play, Shaffer mulls over religion and the idea of unorthodox exaltation negatively impacting an individual’s morale. Alan creates the character Equus and his horse religion, which parallels Christianity.
The Island of Dr. Moreau is a novel by H.G. Wells. The book centers around a man named Edward Prendick, who is stranded on an island with two scientists. The scientists, Montgomery and Dr. Moreau have located to this island for a very intense reason. They are experimenting by modeling animals after human beings, and making beasts into man. The beasts not only look like men, but learn and see themselves as man.
People’s behavior often comes from a parental figure that they grew up with. So imagine someone growing up without a specific parental figure their whole life; imagine someone not being able to look up to one person their whole childhood. In The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, Peekay never had his parents to look up to. Through his childhood Peekay had many people to look up to but his mentor was always changing due to the fact they either had to leave them or died. Still this only made him stronger because the influence of a million makes you extraordinarily unique, and can help you more than just one mentor can.he never had the same person due to them dying or leaving him.
Godly? Man has only dreamt of the though of creating a perfect world for thousands of years and or even finding it. Better worlds have been referenced in many different literatures and even the bible, 'Moses led the Jews into the chosen land' even Heaven. For the longest time we have realized that nothing is perfect nor will ever be.
