Today we are here to discuss the matter of the death of a local child. William Armstrong's death was caused by none other than his own brother. Brother had always thought William to be an embarrassment and was willing to do anything to end the humiliation. He had accumulated a plan to kill the child. Brother was compassionate and kind to his brother only when he wanted to be and would change his attitude whenever he thought right. It has been found that Brother did kill William Armstrong. Since before William could walk, talk, and even crawl, Brother wanted to get rid of him. His first comment that makes me suspicious is when Brother said “They named him William Armstrong, which is like tying a big tail on a small kite. Such a name sounds …show more content…
First Brother stated that “he looked straight at me and grinned. I skipped through the rooms, down the echoing halls, shouting, "Mama, he smiled. He's all there! He's all there!" and he was.”(Hurst 2) Brothers plan was no longer in his mind at the time when he discovered that he may be able to help his brother to walk and crawl and create more facial emotions. His next step was walking. Brother Would not give up on William even when it seemed pointless. After weeks and months of trying almost 100 times a day, William stood. Brother said that after he stood for a few seconds he fell, and “When he fell, I grabbed him in my arms and hugged him, our laughter pealing through the swamp like a ringing bell.” (Hurst, 5). Brother had helped him overcome this weak point and from that day on, he knew that William could do it. Brother knew his brothers strength and knew what he could do. He also knew what he could not do. This is when William was found dead. Brother didn’t know what to do and claimed to be heartbroken. He stated this, and I quote "Doodle! Doodle!" I cried, shaking him, but there was no answer but the ropy rain. He lay very awkwardly, with his head thrown far back, making his vermilion neck appear unusually long and slim. His little legs, bent sharply at the knees, had never before seemed so fragile, so thin. I began to weep” (Hurst, 12). This is why we are gathered here to talk about who the …show more content…
There is no denying that this boy would be here with us if Brother had not left him to die. “We never spoke (What are the words that can solder cracked pride?), but I knew he was watching me, watching for a sign of mercy. The lightning was near now, and from fear he walked so close behind me he kept stepping on my heels.”(Hurst 11). William felt ashamed and Brother showed no mercy. This is when he began to run. His description of why he ran was as plain as this. He had never wanted William to be alive, but he still tried to make the best of it. Eventually he got bored and tired of taking care of the helpless child and left him to perish. Brother stated “The faster I walked, the faster he walked, so I began to run. The rain was coming, roaring through the pines, and then, like a bursting Roman candle, a gum tree ahead of us was shattered by a bolt of lightning.” (Hurst, 11) He certainly wasn’t giving in and wanted to prove his strength and show his brother what he should be able to do. While he was running he felt a wave of strength and cruelty wash through his mind and didn’t go back. His brother, William, begging for mercy and for his brother to come back, died only seconds later. Though Brother said that he regretted it, he also told me this. “ I heard Doodle, who had fallen behind, cry out, "Brother, Brother,
