During the Battle of the Alamo, which occurred during the mid 1830's, one man, William B. Travis, demonstrated leadership by sending out a message to Texas and the United States that it was their duty to protect their nation from the foreign Mexican forces. In doing so, Travis leaves one of the most important legacies in our great nation.

Growing up, Travis seemed to have quite the typical lifestyle of an American man. Facts from a biography on Travis written by Archie P. McDonald on tamu.edu will show that Travis came into this world in August of 1809. According to McDonald's biography, Mexico had received a new leader, General Lopez de Santa Ana. It would appear his efforts were to have complete power in Texas, and he would not stop until the Americans there were dealt with properly. After certain conflicts, according to McDonald, the Americans in the foreign land, including Travis, were on the brink of a war. Could one perhaps say that the Americans were responsible for beginning this conflict? By cooperating with Mexico, they may have spared a bloodshed, but these men would not back down. Based on a photograph from Texas A&M University's website, tamu.edu, it seems the Alamo is constructed primarily out of stone, and it is built in a rectangular shape with an arch in the center. The texture of the building can be described as rocky and very rough. Historical evidence will show that this structure was created by the Spanish when they first settled in what would later become Texas, so that proves the building has been around for quite sometime. Moreover, Travis, the man who would be a leader in the Battle of the Alamo, appeared to be a commonplace American man at this time. In one illustration of him from 1835, which was created by Wiley Martin and found within McDonald's biography, Travis is portrayed as a man who is white with dark hair. His hair forms sideburns on his cheeks, a common trait for men around this time period.
