William Blake was born on November 24, 1757, in the Soho district of London, England. He barely went to school, and was mostly was educated at home by his mother. He was heavily influenced by the Bible and that influence would be his lifetime source of inspiration. At an early age, Blake had experienced biblical visions such as claiming to have seen God’s head appear in a window; He also said to have seen the prophet Ezekiel and angels hanging around under a tree. These visions also had an impact in his art and his great works. He was very skill artist in his youth, so much so that at the age of 10 he sketched the human figure using only plaster casts and ancient statues as his guides. When he was 14, he was an apprentice to an engraver. After many year of service working with him, Blake was soon sent to Westminster Abbey to make drawing of famous tombs and monuments which spawned his love for the Gothic art-style. …show more content…

From his childhood to teen he was predominantly Christian. In his adult life, he started dabbling in other philosophies such as Catholicism, Transcendentalism, Mysticism, etc. This dangerous lifestyle led him in to a path of darkness which reflected upon his works which slander God and the faith he once held dear. His personality changed as well from being a man of warmth and full of life to a cold, cynical and depressing soul. Blake’s works integrated his love of art into his writings. One of his works, titled Songs of Innocence is a small collaboration of poems of simple and sweet songs. His other work, Songs of Experience, are also “happy” poems but they have a hidden dark side to them that demeaning God’s power by saying that both God and Satan are necessary in the universe.
