Authors have always used different techniques to get their points across in their poems. Most authors also have a certain idea they are known for writing about. William Blake is a brilliant English author that is an influential figure in the Romantic Age. Blake is known for his unique thoughts and his writings has influenced many other authors. The Garden of Love and The Divine Image are two poems that William Blake has written that has so much similarities as well as differences. Although The Divine Image and The Garden of Love are about two different topics, William Blake used similar and different techniques to convey the meaning of his poem such as repetition, personification, story format, and rhyme scheme.

Blake described in the “Divine Image” that the virtues of delight were mercy, pity, peace, and love to these virtues the people “return their thankfulness” (4). This proves that these four virtues are characteristics of being human. People are thankful of these virtues because when individuals think of virtues one thinks of God. God is most known for having these virtues, so people see these virtues like blessing. People try to have these traits because they want to model God and feel grateful for these characteristics. Although they pray and worship God, it seems like the author believes they are actually worshiping the divine image since these characteristics seem to be what people look up to. According to Blake, “Mercy has a human heart, pity a human face” (9-10). Mercy and pity is two of the virtue that have human characteristics in this poem. The author put personification in his poem to show how the virtues go side by side with human weaknesses. Mercy is a weakness to the human heart as pity is to a human’s face. By using personification, the virtues seem to be described more vividly. On the other hand, the author seems to have wrote this poem in a story form. Although it rhymes after every sentence, the poem starts out describing the author playing in a garden at a young age. When the author grows up and comes back to this garden he realizes that a lot has changed. A colorful garden filled with flowers was now filled with tombstones and graves, By using the story format the author shows the major change that happened in this garden from when the author was small.
