“The damned brat must be protected against her own idiocy.” (Williams...2) The story is about how a doctor goes to see a little girl who is sick but she gives him a hard time so he uses force to get her to open her mouth. “The Use of Force” by william carlos williams uses the expectations they had of doctors in 1939, but the expectations of today's doctors have changed dramatically.
The expectations of doctors in 1939 were much more different than today. Sometimes the use force even when they know they shouldn't. “courts in the United States have supported a physician's duty to treat incompetent patients against the express wishes.” (Treating competent patients by force..1) Although doctors do this i believe that they should respect their patients wishes, and use force.
This is what makes doctors untrustworthy of patients care. “patients enjoy a wide range of rights including national health care.” (treating competent...1) Sometimes being forcibly treated is the right thing to do if you’re trying to save someone’s life. Although you shouldn’t enjoy it or take pleasure out of it. The conflict of the story was forcing her to open her mouth. Therefore he thought to himself “ I could have torn the child apart in my own fury and enjoied it. It was pleasure to attack her. My face was burning with it.”

In the story he wanted to show her that really he can do anything with force and yet again he says.. “His own fury and desire to overpower her.” (The use of...1) The doctor however did overpower her, he also overpowered the girl’s parents, because he had the dad hold her down, the mom was angry with how she was acting with the doctor. Once he opened her mouth he found what he was looking for, and she did have Diphtheria , before opening her mouth “ Her tonge was cut and she was screaming in wild hysterical shrieks.” (Williams...1) hurting her was what he really wanted when she started kicking, he was angry that she wasn’t letting him. It all started because of her not listening to the doctor. The story they describe’s the doctor as a “nice man” (williams...1) but through the rest of the story he makes it perfectly clear that he is not the type of doctor you want to help you. The doctor uses so much force as well as her parents, that the doctor cuts Mathilda’s mouth and makes her bleed. The doctor could have been nice from the start, that way he could have Mathilda’s trust, and so he wouldn’t have used force. “I could see that they were all very nervous, eyeing me up and down distrustfully” (Williams..1) They were new patients to him so i could see why there was not
