Red Wheelbarrow The “Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams is a perfect example of Imagist Poetry because it embodies the life of a hard working wheelbarrow and the beings that respect it without ever stating that the wheelbarrow worked. The Title “Red Wheelbarrow” evokes thoughts of a hardworking farm environment which helps the reader direct his or her channel of thought. The poem may be short but Williams intentionally decreases the length to place a greater emphasis on each word in every couplet. The poem “Red Wheelbarrow” uses strong literary terms and descriptive words which allows each reader to interpret the message in a different manner but reach a fairly similar conclusion. Each couplet in “Red Wheelbarrow” adds another characteristic and element of life into the poetic statement. The couplets may be simple but the underlying meaning and purpose of their placements is what makes the poem unique. The “Red Wheelbarrow” is an example of imagist Poetry. Imagist Poetry strived to express clarity of expression through the use of precise visual words. The poem is composed of 4 couplets with each couplet having two lines. Three words make the first line of each couplet followed with one word to conclude the second line. The three words in the first line helps the reader imagine what can be expected and the second line word directs the channel of thought to a specific atmosphere. The poem is free verse with no specific rhyming patterning. The only pattern present is the couplet word scheme stated above.
