Living in Michigan then graduating from the University of Michigan medical school, William set out to redesign the traditional pill into something more effective. William saw that traditional pills hard outer coating were preventing the digestion of the substance within the pill. Then with much experimentation, Upjohn was able to create the friable pill which could be easily crushed, managed, and digested. The friable pill was invented and patented in 1885 by William Erastus Upjohn. The friable pill has served the greater community by replacing the traditional pill. The friable pill is different from the previously traditional pill used, because it can be easily crushed, easily managed in distribution, and far more easily digested allowing for the effects of the substance to be prevalent.
