Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. There are 202 pages in the book. Lord of the Flies takes place in the 1950s at the start of a new world war, when a plane transporting British schoolboys to safety, is shot down. When the plane crashes, it lands on an uninhabited jungle island in the ocean, with no surrounding islands. The island has a big mountain in the center, a surrounding and dense jungle, a beach, and one part of the island is rocky cliffs. The island’s weather is mainly hot and humid. When Ralph needs his help building shelters, he is off somewhere in the jungle. Simon hallucinates the Lord of the Flies, which is the flies covering the dead sow’s head. He is the one to figure out that the beast was just a pilot’s dead body and parachute. When he tries to tell the others that the beast is not real, he is mistaken for the beast and is killed. • Roger- is Jack’s right hand man and torturer. Roger is very eager to let go of his civilized ways and give into the bloodlust. He goes wherever Jack goes and does whatever he says without hesitation. Roger is responsible for the death of Piggy and the torturing of Sam and Eric. At the end of the book, he sharpens a stick on both ends, which will presumably be stuck between Ralph’s head and the ground. • Sam and Eric- are twins who are always together and referred to as one person. Then one night when Sam and Eric are watching the fire, they see the beast. They make a mad dash back to the base and alert the other boys. The next morning Ralph, Jack, and all of the other older boys go on a hunt for the beast’s hideout. Ralph, Jack, and Roger go up to the mountain at night to check for the beast. When the beast is still there, they quickly leave. When Jack and his hunters leave, they make it a point to leave an offering for the beast. We find out that the beast is not real when Simon finds a body of a dead pilot from the war. When Simon tries to tell the others, they mistake him for the beast and kill
