William Goldwater's 'Conscience Of A Conservative'

While reading the chapter 1 of the Conscience of a Conservative, I found many of Goldwater’s views to make perfect sense, and also the problems in the political arena are the same. Which can only mean we haven't come a long way since the 1960s some of the logics that Goldwater uses we can sure use. Goldwater starts the chapter by saying that Conservatism is not an economic theory, but it has some economic implications. He arguing that conservatism is not a mechanistic economic only philosophy and it is a fact comprehensive in range and application and should never be apologized for and modified with labels like ‘progressive conservative’. But how what the nature of the man, Goldwater throughout the rest of the chapter names them. The first one being that “The Conservative knows that to regard man as part of an undifferentiated mass is to consign him to ultimate slavery”. Which basically means when you think of people only as a member of the group, you dehumanize their abilities. The next statement that stood out was that “the economic and spiritual aspects of man’s nature an inextricably intertwined. He cannot be economically free, or even economically efficient if he is enslaved politically; conversely, man’s political freedom is illusory if he is dependent for his economic needs on the state.” If we were to rely on the states to control our economic needs then things wouldn’t get done and we need to learn to make hard decisions. The last two statement he makes basically explains how we see the reasons for the outrage that is manifesting itself throughout our society. Goldwater finishes off the chapter by basically explaining that the goal of a conservative is to achieve the maximum amount of freedom for the everyone while stilling maintaining social order. But realistically the freedom we have now is as good as it’s going to get. We can try and run for office and make a difference but if you don’t have the money and the right kind of connections then you're never getting into
