The year was 1895 and the place was Springfield College of the YMCA, where William Morgan created the great game of volleyball. This was the year and the location of the first competitive volleyball game in history (Infante). The first game of volleyball is important because it was the start of a sport that many individuals love to play. It would be a great thing to see how the game has changed throughout time and what it used to be like to play. Morgan got the idea of using your hands to move the ball around the court. He didn’t know how exactly to use this thought. Some of the games that he observed aren’t anything like his, but the quickness and athleticism in those games were thought to part of this new one. Some games that volleyball was adapted from include: basketball, baseball, tennis, bad mitten, and handball (Infante). Some of the early rules help to figure out exactly what things came from what games. The first rules of the game are much different than today’s rules. The rules have been adapted multiple times since the first official rules. Before the demonstration took place, there was a conference held. The rules had been revised there and were also made official (Hisken). In the first rules, there was no limit on how many players could be on the court at one time. Also when the ball was served over the net, a player could help it over if it didn’t make it over. If the ball touched the net at any time, it was out of bounds. There were nine “innings” to every game. In each inning both teams got to serve three times. There was also an unlimited number of touches on the ball on each side of the net (Odeneal).
