William Shakespeare, a historically significant figure in the area of English plays, not only was a poet, he was also a playwright and an actor. Born in the year of 1564, he found himself living in the small market town of Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire in England. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, a farmer’s daughter. From then on Shakespeare began his career in the wide world of poems, and plays. Shakespeare wrote numbers of plays throughout his lifetime, just a few being Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth and presumably his most popular; Romeo and Juliet.
When Shakespeare was given a chance to display his work to the world due to the theaters closing because of the great bubonic plague of London in 1593, he wrote two narrative poems, Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece, marking the beginning of his superlative sonnets. 154 of his sonnets have survived, verifying his reputation as a phenomenal poet and playwright.
