William Shakespeare is the most famous and influential author in English literature. Though Shakespeare was only on this earth for fifty two years, his two epic poems, thirty eight plays and one hundred fifty-four sonnets have redefined the meaning of English literature. Elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and even universities have made it a point in English classes to make one of Shakespeare’s writings a highlight in the classroom, all over the world. Shakespeare was baptized on April 26th 1564. In the olden days, children were baptized typically three days after their birth. So, it is assumed that Shakespeare was born on April 23rd. Shakespeare was born into an up and coming family of a successful Glover, John Shakespeare, who was an abiding citizen of English law. His mother, Mary Arden, was the daughter of a wealthy landowning farmer. The family was Catholic and a member of The Church of England. Shakespeare attended King’s New School in Stratford where he learned the basic Latin language and learned extensive rules of grammar. In grammar school, Shakespeare studied the classics of Virgil and Ovid. Coming from a lower class upbringing, Shakespeare did not have a formal university education (Forester 9-10). After finishing grammar school, November 1582, at age eighteen, Shakespeare married a twenty-six year old women, Anne Hathaway of Shottery, England. It has been insinuated that Shakespeare was forced into marrying Hathaway due to the birth of their daughter, Susanna, six months later. Othello completely encompasses an Elizabethan tragedy by the hero, Othello, having a tragic flaw: jealousy. Jealousy weaves its hateful strings through every character in Othello. It is said that Shakespeare’s Othello was inspired by the hatred and tension between Europe at the time. It was said that “Othello” was written to appease King James and his court on their views on Europe. Shakespeare was inspired has had so much influence on today’s culture it inspired one of the most renown movie to date, The Lion King.
