William shakespeare is one of the most famous play writers in history. He has absolutely revolutionized english plays and literature. Some of his plays are so easy to determine if it is a tragedy or comedy! But the merchant of venice is a whole other beast in itself. Lots of people say that it is both. You can’t determine if it is a comedy or tragedy! In my opinion this play is a comedy. This story is a comedy because the majority of the characters received a favorable conclusion, the play is mostly lighthearted, comedy is thrown in situations where it shouldn't be, and the quirky nature of the plot.

But we all know how it ended, Death. That is a prime example of what a tragedy is supposed to look …show more content…

That's the tough question. If we look at the whole play we see all of the tragedies and comedy that is involved. At the end of the play it happens to actually end on a high note. One example is when launcelot and jessica were having a very relaxed and pretty funny conversation about how the correlation between jewish refusal to consume pork and the rise of bacon! This conversation was so out of place and not needed in the play that everyone was so confused! That is just one example of how Shakespeare threw in random funny moments like this. So in the play we all felt happy at most times. And most of these characters that did go thru tragedy and conflict. Bassanio especially! He was pretty happy because the Venetian courts determined that all of his debts and deeds to Shylock were removed! This is after he made a deal with Shylock. He is pretty lucky that it didn't end up worse for him. But that is just one example that a character received great closure in the
