The creation of over two thousand words and the evolution of the English language can all be traced back to one man: Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was born over 400 years ago, and his work has paved the way for the English language. The articles “How Shakespeare influences the way we speak now”, “William Shakespeare’s Impact on Theater”, “How Outrage Built of a Shakespearean Depiction of Trump” written by Anderson, Octane, and Krulwich, and the graphic novel excerpt, all explore the different ways Shakespeare’s presence is felt in society. In the graphic novel, the main characters use many phrases that Shakespeare used, including lines from Romeo and Juliet. In the excerpt one character says “‘Why Then O Brawling Love/ O Loving Hate/ O Anything, Of Nothing First Create’”(2009). This excerpt demonstrates that Shakespeare’s influence is still felt in different aspects of literature, including a graphic novel. In addition, the storylines and plots of Shakespeare’s stories, has helped define modern writing and he has also created genres that hadn’t existed before. In “William Shakespeare’s Impact on Theater” Krulwich writes, “Shakespeare is also credited as having invented genres that mixed both tragedy and comedy” (Krulwich 1). If Shakespeare hadn’t mixed these genres, then we would have modern-day stories that included aspects of both tragedy and comedy. Furthermore, many authors use many elements of Shakespeare’s writing in their own stories. Krulwich writes, “In addition, many famous American novelists cite Shakespeare as a great influence on their own works” (Krulwich 1). These pieces of text demonstrate how literature wouldn’t be the same without Shakespeare and his influence on elements of a story.
