Back in time, during the Elizabethan Era, there was a man who was regarded as as the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare. Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor from 1564 - 1616. He has written a total of 37 plays and 154 sonnets throughout his professional life. William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford and was baptised there three days later. He was the third child of John Shakespeare, a glove maker, and Mary Arden, the daughter of a landowner. Shakespeare had the total of seven siblings, but some of them died at a very young age. He wasn't just a playwright, but also an actor, a land owner, and a shareholder in the company that owned the Globe. There are several reasons for Shakespeare’s success and everlasting popularity. First, his ability to summarize the range of human emotions in simple, yet profoundly eloquent verse. One of the interesting points is that Shakespeare expressed/revealed the real emotions of people, not just the beautiful parts of it. Second, the variety of story plots that Shakespeare wrote. Not only the story plots, but also the different types of plays that he wrote; comedy, tragedy, history, melodrama, adventure, love stories and fairy tales. Third, his unique characters in each play. Fourth, Shakespeare’s plays have been performed by famous actors and have also been translated into many languages. Therefore, it was easy for people to understand and enjoy his plays more. Apart from his own writing skills, many supporters and patrons were also the reasons for Shakespeare’s success. He transformed European theatre by expanding expectations about what could be accomplished through innovation in characterization, plot, language and genre. Shakespeare's writings have also impacted many notable novelists and poets, including Herman Melville, Charles Dickens, Maya Angelou, and still continue to influence new authors even today. Shakespeare is also known that he made up about one quarter of English language. Shakespeare has invented over 1700 of our common words by changing nouns into verbs, changing verbs into adjectives, connecting words never before used together, adding prefixes and suffixes, and devising words wholly original.
