William Shakespeare, a historically significant figure in the area of English plays, not only was a poet, he was also a playwright and an actor. Born in the year of 1564, he found himself living in the small market town of Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire in England. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, a farmer’s daughter. From then on Shakespeare began his career in the wide world of poems, and plays. Shakespeare wrote numbers of plays throughout his lifetime, just a few being Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth and presumably his most popular; Romeo and Juliet.

It would be called the Polygonal Globe Theatre, and it would be here where William would write and perform some of his most famous plays. After establishing the new theatre, William began to experiment with a new genre of writing: tragedies. These consisted of plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and King Lear. Let's go through each one to get a better understanding. One of the most popular is romantic comedy such as, Romeo and Juliet.
After he was out of college he then went to London to write for the stage. His first play “Dido, Queen of Carthage” was written sometime while he was attending Cambridge but wasn’t published until 1594 (Christopher). His next play “Tamburlaine” was one of the first plays to successfully use blank verse in a theatrical manner. This was considered the beginning of the mature phase of the Elizabethan theater (Christopher). He then only wrote four more plays that we well known, however those four plays laid the groundwork to four of Shakespeare’s most famous plays.
Since he lived in Elizabethan England life was very hard for him because he wasn’t born into a family of wealth or nobility and he didn’t have a great education. Shakespeare wrote thirty-eight plays, one hundred and fifty-four sonnets and two narrative poems. He produced his best-known works between 1589 and 1613, and from then onward they are considered classics. Ben Jonson is regarded as the second most important English playwright after William Shakespeare. He was born in Westminster in late 1572 and died on August 6, 1637.
