William Wallace is the main character in the movie Braveheart. When he was young, his father and brother were killed fighting the longshanks leaving William to grow up under the care of his uncle, Argyle. As a man, Wallace returned to his village and fell in love with a woman named Murron. They secretly got married, but Murron was killed by the British shortly after the wedding. William, fueled with hatred and the yearning for freedom, led the Scottish army to war. Throughout the war, William endured life threatening injuries and torture for his belief that the Scotish should be free. Robert’s father, the king of Scotland, suffered from a disease that would soon kill him. Robert’s father wants to prepare his son for ruling the kingdom, but in doing so he leads him astray. Robert de Bruce and his army of noblemen began the war working with William Wallace’s army, but Robert’s father told him to abandon Wallace’s army and betray them. During battle Robert tries to kill Wallace and realises what Wallace is fighting for, love. Robert offers a truce between his and Wallace’s army. When Wallace shows up to accept the truce, noblemen take him out on the orders of Robert’s father. Freedom, to me, is being in control of yourself without having anyone else rule over you. It is having the option to make your own decisions. In the movie, William Wallace leads a whole entire army on the belief that once they defeat the Longshanks, they will finally have true freedom. When they beat the British army, the Scottish were free and no longer required to follow the British’s rules. Even though my freedom mostly consists of Mom giving me a later curfew, my definition of freedom is similar to the Scottish. They are controlled by the British and follow their rules; whereas, I am controlled by my mother and follow her rules, and we both have the same end goal of one day being in control of our own lives.
