There once was a young willow tree that lived by a big rushing river surrounded by large, flowing meadows. The willow tree lived in harmony with the few insects and animals that lived nearby. It had a happy, simple existence. It would watch the birds fly all day, and listen to the crickets play their calming symphonies all night in the summer and the wolf’s howl in the winter. One bright and sunny day, a family of foxes came to the willow’s waterfront home. The mother of the foxes approached the willow and asked, “May we make a home between your roots to raise our new young?” The willow agreed, but he was worried that his home might become too crowded. A few weeks later, just as the willow was becoming used to having the foxes living with him, a family of hawks flew to his boughs. She pushed open the doors and marched up to his secretary. “Just you go and tell the mayor that Jane Martin is here to see him and won’t leave until I talk to him,” said Jane. Five minutes later, Jane was standing across from the mayor, a skinny man with dark hair and a thin mustache. “Look,” she said, “you have no right to build a road through my backyard without my consent.” “Yes,” said the mayor, “but you see, I am prepared to offer you two thousand dollars for that land.” “Well I,” said Jane, “am prepared to say no.” “Well then,” said the mayor, “I have no choice but to evict you.” “Nope,” said Jane, “no no no, you see, this entire valley was actually owned by my father, but he allowed you all to stay for a bit.
