Wilsonville: A Short Story

It was a late afternoon when Marlon and I were getting ready for our first tennis match of the 2014-2015 season against Wilsonville. We were sitting on the bleachers next to the tennis courts waiting for our match to be called up. This was my first year playing tennis and didn’t know much, but I felt confident about this match knowing that playing over the summer was enough practice.
The tennis courts were always gorgeous at this time of the day. I remember when the courts used to have a ton of dirt around it. It looked like a desert. Marlon asked.
“Heck yeah man!” I replied instantly. Our coach, Jay Stokes called our names while looking down at his clipboard. He told us our match is about to begin.
As Marlon and I stepped onto the court, I felt a gush of nervousness and didn’t know why, but it just hit me unexpectedly. I glanced over and saw our opponents. Just looking at our opponents made me petrified. They looked like the type of guys that always win and never loses. One of the guys wore white Nike Vapor shoes with green stripes that glowed brighter than the sun. The other guy wore Black Adidas barricades. I looked down at myself and felt agitated. I wore regular sneakers that one would wear to school and wore a regular white shirt with black shorts. The confidence that was in me vanished. “Good luck guys!” Our opponents yelled from across the court. “You too!” Marlon and I shouted back. The first set started. Our opponents were serving first. I’m on the other end waiting anxiously. He tossed the ball up into the air, and swung so expeditiously, the ball bounced and flew right past my body.
