Winter Dreams is a short story written by Scott Fitzgerald. The story was written in prose and it is narrated in third person. Most of the actions in the story takes place in Shelter Island which is located in New York. Dexter mention in the story that he is from Black Bear Village, but that is the only time that this place is mentioned. Dexter Green is a boy of 14 years old who works as a caddy for pocket money. His father owns the second best grocery store of Sherry Island. It seems that winter is not the best season for Dexter. During this period of time, he feels melancholic. She is now Judy Simms; unhappily married to a guy who treats her bad. He is upset when he is told that Judy is no longer beautiful. Analysis Dexter is compulsive when acting in certain way around Judy Jones. It seems that he does not want to love Judy but to possess her. His deepest regret is that he will never be able to possess Judy. He loves her and he would love her until he has gray hair and he is too old to love. However he can’t have her. This causes him deep pain exactly the same way he was experienced happiness. Judy symbolize the beauty of the age when she expresses her frustration at her loneliness – She sees her beauty as a sign of deserving great happiness. “I’m more beautiful than anybody else” why can’t I be happy? Judy fails to attain happiness because she is unable to understand what happiness is, what is requires, and what path leads her to attain it. The narrator tells the story in third person meaning that he is not a character in the story. The main theme in the story is love. We are able to see how Dexter falls deeply in love with this lady that does not have the minimum respect to others or even to herself. In some way we can say that Dexter was not in love with her, he was just obsessed with her beauty and his desire to possess her. He is a successful man, he has accomplished what he has proposed to achieve so now he has to possess Judy because he is Dexter
