Reading Keith Basso’s book, Wisdom Sits in Places helped give me a fuller understanding of Native American culture. Especially that of the Western Apache tribe at the White Mountain Reservation. The book explains how intimately close the people are to the land. Their stories and myths relate to place names and locations on the reservation. The place names and stories are connected. In the words of tribe members, the stories stalk them. Nick Thompson, one of the tribal elders, had this to say, “that story is changing you now, making you want to live right” This might sound stereotypical, but the Western Apache sound like they are closer to the land.
