Allison Padgett Instructor: Elizabeth Jilka THTR 1001-013: 11:50-12:40 March 1, 2024 Critique 1: Witch Witch The play Witch by Jen Silverman was both compelling and fascinating to experience. The name Witch is given to the play because one of the characters, Elizabeth Sawyer, is accused of being involved with witchcraft. The name Witch is significant to the play because one of the first scenes is Elizabeth talking to the audience about her witchcraft accusations. This first scene of Witch includes Elizabeth speaking to the audience with a light only shining on her, setting the tone of the play. The content of Witch is based mainly on the main character, Elizabeth Sawyer, and her complexity with feminism and how society can revolve around power. The director also includes aspects of witchcraft from Elizabeth and supernatural powers acted out by Scratch. Director Steven Marzolf demonstrates how power and oppression can be overcome by resisting temptation. In this case, temptations of wishing bad among the people that mock her and give up her soul to Scratch. During Witch, Marzolf also conveys to the audience that power can be everything to someone and mean so much to a person that they would be willing to give up very important plans to gain power. The content was indeed clear because of the costumes, lighting, and accents that the characters had. All of these forms in Witch helped the audience (and myself) stay engaged in the content and keep the theme of the play consistent throughout. Marzolf, along with the designers and actors, all paired together perfectly to create the feeling as if I was in the play myself. They all did a great job of keeping the play focused on one time period, one setting, and one
