Change is inevitable. Seasons change, people change; everything evolves at every second of every day. It would be abnormal if those things did not. However, not all change can be positive. There is big controversy over whether some of the so-called “idols” of America’s celebrities, who have been in the spot light for quite some time, ought to be behaving and how their change of lifestyle is a negative impact on today’s youth. Conversely, there are also those celebrities who use their power of glory for good in the world and provide a positive example to those who watch and listen closely to their every move. That statement can apply to when a celebrity is termed an idol when really they should not be; the term is given to them just because of being very popular. For example there are famous rappers like Wiz Khalifa who rap about how much they enjoy sex, money, and weed. Does he deserve the term of an idol because he can rhyme and spend thousands of dollars on something that does not benefit anyone but himself? No. The local newspaper, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, wrote an article in 2010 named, “Wiz would be the wrong role model”. In that article, Tony Norman writes about how Wiz Khalifa had gotten arrested for possession of marijuana and how disappointing it was how he could not use his popularity to positively influence the people who idolize him: “I’m mostly mad about the loss of an opportunity to influence a generation of black kids who don’t value education. Rappers have disproportionately more influence with these kids than people like myself”(Norman). The sad part about his statement is that it is absolutely correct. It does not matter how big or small, but there is always something positive or influential that can be done. When that phrase or question directed towards celebrities, a lot of them shine in how much philanthropy, donations, and time they have given to those in need. Stars such as Sandra Bullock, Blake Shelton, and Alicia Keys have dedicated their lives to giving back and making that difference around the world. DoSomething.org has contributed to acknowledging those who have done the extra work and effort to provide. On the website regarding star Sandra Bullock, it states, “She was honored with a Mothers Who Make a Difference Award and the People’s Choice Award for ‘Favorite Humanitarian’ for her ongoing efforts in disaster relief and education” (Top 20 Celebs). The famous country singer and idol, Blake Shelton has also made a spot on the list stating, “In response to the tornado that devastated his hometown of Moore, Oklahoma in May, Shelton created Healing in the Heartland: Relief Benefit Concert that raised $6 million to fund recovery and rebuilding efforts in central Oklahoma” (Top 20 Celebs). And last but not least the brilliant vocal performer Alicia Keys also gave back and earned a number on the list by: Headlining The Global Citizen Festival in Central Park this summer, which drew over 60,000 people to be a part of a movement to end extreme poverty.
