Wonderful Wizard of Oz Devin Mesquite Dr. Friedman U.S. History, Block 5a October 15, 2014 The Wonderful Wizard of OZ is a world famous novel written by L. Frank Baum and was then published in 1900. The story is about a small girl named Dorothy who gets caught in a nasty tornado with her dog Toto. Dorothy is now lost and needs to find her way back home to Kansas. On her way many other characters tag along to join her on the journey to see the Wizard of Oz in Emerald City. They include a Scarecrow, cowardly lion, and a living tin man. The only thing standing in there way is wicked witch, who seems to have a different agenda planned for the group. Along with the book a movie was made to compliment the book and make it possible so that more individuals could enjoy the rich story. In the movie edition Dorothy is simply just dreaming about her adventure, in the book it is actually acted as a real life event. The biggest and most significant change from the the book to the movie is the color of Dorothy’s slippers. In the motion picture they appear ruby red only to create a better contrast when walking on the Yellow Brick Road. The book seems to portray them as silver representing the silver act of the time. In the movie she also appears tuff and rescues the crew in many different dangerous situations, but in the movie she she is a helpless little girl. In the book all of the characters must wear a pair of special glasses in order to reach the Land of Oz, unlike the movie. Hollywood changes the structure of the movie leaving out the historical context in order to make the book more appealing to its audience. They added color and choreographed songs to make sure that this would be accomplished. So watching the movie or reading the book will portray a very different
