Before the book was even officially released the book had sold out all 10,000 copies made and with each book published the success increased. Seeing the immense profits drawn from these stories Hollywood decided to take this beloved story and make it into a film. In the year 1925 Larry Semon, a famous comedian of the silent era decided to make take on the task of making this story into a film. America had just been in depression and the world was now ravaged with war and Metro Goldwyn Mayer was looking for films to take the minds of the people out of the harsh reality. What better ways to do this than to bring to reality the story these people loved as children and share it with the children they loved? Glinda the good witch arrives and gives the shoes to Dorothy because they possess magic powers which should not fall into the hands of the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked Witch comes and when finding the slippers on Dorothy declares she will have her revenge. Glinda then tells Dorothy that she must meet with the Wizard of Oz in order to return home. She goes off to see the wizard where she meets the scarecrow, the cowardly lion, and the tin man. The four set off to Oz in search of a heart, a brain, courage and home. When they arrive they meet with Oz who is a floating apparition of a head. He declares that he will only help them if they prove themselves worthy by bringing the broom of the wicked witch of the west.
