The musicals, The Wizard of Oz and Wicked, are both wonderfully great in their own ways. I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz on repeat and after just watching Wicked, I once again have The Wizard of Oz on repeat, watching for the many possibilities. This paper will compare and contrast the characters, the moral of each musical, and the plots. The characters in The Wizard of Oz and Wicked overlap in many ways, with characters who share many characteristics and have similar roles. You can infer from both musicals that Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch are the same characters between the two musicals. Such as the Tin Man and Boq. The Tin Man, from The Wizard of Oz, is known for not having a heart, but desires to have one. While Boq has a heart, but when he threatens to leave Nessarose, she accidentally shrinks his heart with a bad spell and therefore Boq reflects the Tin Man. Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister, reflects the Wicked Witch of the East with her ruby red sippers that are given to her by Elphaba after she enchants them to giving her the ability to walk again. These ruby red slippers are also seen on the Wicked Witch of East’s feet when Dorthy smashes her with her house. Which makes you wonder if the Wicked Witch of the West was just wicked towards Dorthy because she wanted to get the ruby red slippers back because they were rightfully hers. Fiyero, in Wicked, reflects Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz when he sings his song about dancing through life without having a clue, almost as if he didn't have a brain, just like Scarecrow, who is known for not having a brain. These characters compare in personalities, but not so much physical appearance until towards the end when Fiyero is turned into a scarecrow by Elphaba to protect him when the angry mob
