In the 1930’s the time had come to where the Great Plains region was devastated by the drought. Oklahoma, Texas, and their neighborhood states such as Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico had heavy winds, very little rainfall, and not a lot of soil causing the residents to hurry and grab their belongings and leave as soon as possible because the Dust Bowl had arrived and was ready to stay. Not only was the drought hitting the farmers hard emotionally but also financially because the drought made the economic conditions worse. Most female workers performed unskilled or semi-skilled machine work but some worked in industries that demanded heavy labor. Some women, for instance, worked on railroads, while others were employed as machinists.
The women were expected to create a happy home, guard the religion, and the morality of her family. The unmarried and married women who tried to seek work outside the home faced limited employment opportunities because of their gender. Women were expected to only focus on domestic duties and her role were limited to continue living in the man’s world. Women roles were expected to be in line with the culture and norms set by the society. The American culture perceived that women were not intellectually and emotionally stable to be involved in the complex world of work and, therefore, women did not take up leadership and political roles.
Women of the revolution were astounding. They were brave and courageous against the much legality that prevented participation. An example of this is Deborah Simpson who disguised herself as a man to fight in war that at the time only allowed men participants. Women were in the background fighting for independence along with colonial men. Women fought for individual liberty to not have to be spoken for by their husbands, to have a voice that can be heard and with political judgment.
The American Revolution or also known as the U.S War of Independence and the American Revolutionary War took place during 1775 to 1783. The Revolution was a conflict arose from the residents of Great Britain’s 13 colonies and the colonial government. The Revolution brought few changes to the lives of women, while the men were away at war, women would stay home and take over the jobs men had before the war.
