Gangster movies have been successful for many years, these movies depict the real-life experiences of gang members. Furthermore, these movies also portray the views that the gang members have for females. Gwendolyn D. Pough, the author of What It Do, Shorty, stated perfectly the minimal number of roles available for them in hood related movies. Ms. Pough wrote, “However, what does come across clearly as one reads the Steffans’s memoir and Bryan’s tell-all are the ways in which some women have chosen to buy into the sexism and misogyny that limits the roles that women can play in hip-hop culture” (Pough. pg. 83). Based on the quote, the woman in hood related movies are repeatedly portrayed as a sex object, who are only useful to the man by supporting his needs, the only females who are not viewed so negatively are the mothers of the gang members. The roles for both male and female characters are always similar, the men are gang members and the woman are just submissive to the men. Although both roles that man and woman are supposed to play, the woman is specific have a challenging task. In the hood, women are seen as sexual objects that can be discarded at any time, and the movie Straight out of Compton really exemplifies these views. Throughout the film, women are called hoes, and bitches, these women are treated poorly, get cheated on, and have no opinion of their own. Luckily there are a few films that show a different side of the hood, films like Set it off show how women in the hood can be strong individuals, who can also do the roles that primarily take.
