Ellis thought that Washington feared the possibility of dying while in office, by volunteering stepping down from office he set the model of how the future presidents should leave office. He wanted to quit while he was still well known, to show that presidents were replaceable no matter how well know they are. Washington believed whites had to respect blacks desire for better economic opportunities, and for blacks to accept the desire of whites for segregation. Washington also believed that blacks could gain rights in the south through conformity. That if blacks accepted the political status quo and worked hard to change it. Change would come about by blacks proving themselves to be productive members of society who’s right to equality could not be denied. Washington’s messaged was controversial some viewed it has Washington selling out.

His main agenda was to promote the policy of submission since black folk could only survive in it. They wanted political power, civil liberties, higher education, accumulation of wealth, and consolidation of the south, and for their values and beliefs, Washington publicly shamed them. Th black folk further internalized the propaganda that slavery was justified, they neglected their own education, and their future depended mainly on their own efforts.
Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, published in 1962, tells the story of men in a psychiatric ward and focuses on two characters called McMurphy and Bromden, and their defiance towards the institution’s system. A critical factor in this novel are the women. The 1960’s played a significant role in changing the norms of social issues, and the perfect idea of women was changing too. Women were no longer just stay at home wives, but had their own voice in society, and many people did not agree with these untraditional views. Kesey’s representation of women in this novel illustrate them in a poor light that makes it obvious that they don’t fit the ideal womanly persona.
In an age of double standards, people try to pick out everything and anything that can be offending. The offense in this particular situation is misogyny. In plenty of Washington Irving’s books, the message portrayed about women is usually negative. The main women are usually abusive, hateful, as well as uncooperative. Though plenty of people in today’s society view Irving as a misogynist, I do not.

Misogyny is the dislike of, contempt for, or prejudice of women; Washington Irving has been accused of misogyny because of the treatment of women in his stories and their content. Washington Irving was a writer during the 1800’s, and some of his most popular works include “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Within these tales and other works of Irving’s, aspects of misogyny is discernible, though there is debate about whether the author himself was a misogynist. I believe that the misogyny that is shown throughout a select few of Irving’s works is due in part to the time period, not entirely Irving, himself.
