After reading the novel Revolutionary Mothers I have gained significant knowledge and a better grasp of the Revolutionary war. Carol Berkin 's purpose in writing this book was a simple one: Presenting a series of lenses of various raced women and how they affected and were effected by the Revolutionary War. She presents how women of every skin color was a major factor during the war and ultimately in aiding the formation of our nation. A major difference between this novel and what I have previously learned is that this novel magnifies contributions women have made for this country. Furthermore the textbooks that I read once in class greatly minimize those contributions and just give a broad overview of them.
I read “Revolutionary Mothers” by Carol Perkins. Berkins tells the many different stories of women throughout the Revolutionary War and the struggles and strives each women faced and overcame. She introduces us to women from all different backgrounds and their own personal stories that have so greatly affected our history today. Throughout the book Berkins shows how large of a role women played during this time period, even though it is often overlooked. Without the courage and bravery from these women during this time period we would have not been able to secure our independence from Britain.
The American Revolution was a political upheaval that brought many changes to America by greatly altering the popular understanding of women’s partisan status and creating a widespread debate over the meaning of women’s rights. White women had large, essential roles in America’s victory in the American Revolution creating new opportunities for women to participate in politics and support different parties. Women were able to take advantage of these opportunities until a conservative backlash developed by 1830 that stopped any political advancement of women. Over the years, women all over the world have spoken out about the rights they should have as men’s equals. Since the start of the women’s rights movement in America, amazing progress has been made, and is still being made as time goes on. We would not be where we are today, however, without some of the great help of women such as Abigail Adams and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Both of these women wrote documents on the issue of equality, Adams writing Letter to John Adams, and Stanton writing Declaration of Sentiments. While it is clear that the two of them shared a very similar viewpoint, the way that they expressed their ideas in their writings differ in a few ways.
In the book Revolutionary Mothers, author Carol Berkin discusses women’s roles in the American Revolution. She separates out the chapters so that she can discuss the different experiences and roles of women during the period. She utilizes primary and secondary sources to talk about how women stepped into their husband’s shoes and maintained their livelihoods and how they furthered the war effort on both sides, as well as how classes and race effected each woman’s experience. Berkin’s main goal was for the reader to understand that although women’s roles aren’t traditionally discussed when talking about the American Revolution, nevertheless, they played a major part in it.
The Fight for Women’s Independence When thinking about the Revolutionary War, we think about the American colonist fighting against British rule for America’s freedom. In Carol Berkin’s book, Revolutionary Mothers: Women in the struggle for America’s Indepe6ndence, we are shown through women’s eyes how the war affects them, and not just the army’s that fought in the war. The war saw changes in women that were different than their style of life had been, although not always recognized by the men who fought the war. Berkin argues that women were still treated the same as before the war, no matter the struggle for independence for their nation and themselves. Throughout history the inferiority of women can be seen everywhere in society. That is why the ratification of the long hard fought 19th amendment to the Constitution in 1920 guaranteeing women the right to vote was a major achievement on the path to equality. But, however it was a minor turning point in United States women’s history. It was a minor turning point in United States women’s history because before the amendment was ratified most women only participated in the domestic household parts of their lives and never really had to earn money or make their own decisions.
In James W. Loewen’s “Handicapped by History,” the author exposes the broken nature of what we are taught in history classes in the Cultural Memory vs. Historical Reality framework. Students only hear of Helen Keller’s struggle to learn to read and write and are never taught of her strong humanitarian and socialist beliefs. In the case of Woodrow Wilson, history books often let his efforts during WWI overshadow his white supremacist beliefs and his schemes to overthrow governments in South American countries. Loewen explains why history books tend to create fairytale-like images of American heroes: “We seem to feel that a person like Helen Keller can be an inspiration only so long as she remains uncontroversial, one-dimensional. We don 't want complicated icons” (Loewen 35).
Thousands of women have screamed at the top of their lungs, clawed at the patriarchy, and tirelessly fought for their rights as citizens of the United States of America. From the beginning of mankind, women have been labeled as inferior to men not only physically, but mentally and intellectually as well. Only in 1920 did women gain the right to voice their opinions in government elections while wealthy white men received the expected right since the creation of the United States. A pioneer in women’s suffrage, Susan B. Anthony publicly spoke out against this hypocrisy in a time when women were only seen as child bearers and household keepers. Using the United State’s very own Constitution and Declaration as ammunition, Anthony wrote countless
After the deaths of many of the women’s rights activists from the older generation, younger leaders began to take charge, and they often aligned themselves with the Progressives. During this time, women’s roles were viewed as homemakers, so many of the Progressive women defended their reform actions as an extension of the traditional role of women. Among, the many values held for many decades by these reformers was the right to vote for women. In her piece, “Why Women Should Vote”, Jane Adams argued how women needed this right “in order to preserve the home,” (Doc C). These views developed into the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which gave women the right to vote.
Although women were not seen on the front lines in battle, their contributions were crucial to the time period of the Revolutionary War. Surprisingly, these “Daughters of Liberty” did more than their fair share to help America win its independence. At the time, women were commonly given traditional jobs such as nurses, maids, and cooks, but some women were given more unconventional jobs such as secret soldiers and spies. Indubitably, women’s roles in the Revolutionary war were unique, diverse and essential. Even though the works of these women at the time was invisible, it improved the empowerment towards women and increased the amount respect they were given.
Women were considered inferior to men; they had to rights and most of all no voice. Typically, as the old saying goes ‘they were to be seen and not hear’. Revolutionary Mothers, by Carol Berkin tells of the general stereotypes of women in America, the roles in which they played during the America revolution, and lastly it tells the story of the women through their own words. Stereotypes of Women In chapter one, Berkin states “God had created her to be a helpmate to man….and formed her for this purpose…to be frugal, and obedient (2005, p.4)”.
In the 1800’s, all women were being controlled under the supervision of their husbands, females did not have an voice until the 1890’s. Women throughout the 1800’s were expected to stay home moms to care for their children's. As Susan B. Anthony teaches us that women had the right to have an education of their own and gain a profession of their very own when she says the following quote “I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand” - (Susan B Anthony). I agree with Susan B Anthony, I believe that women should have the courage to be able to learn many things and not letting men encouraging them failure.
