Women have been part of the Olympics for 116 years, yet somehow with more than a century of experience under their belts they are still perceived as the weaker gender. Women have taken big strides in sports and athletics in the past century, becoming champions, competitors and icons. The track, field, pool or court is their place of work and with strong participation and ongoing success they are still treated as second class citizens in the world of sport. Why is gender still a defining factor in sporting opportunities, funding, television and media coverage, pay rates and recognition around the world?
