In the novella The House on Mango Street, Esperanza observed how the women around her were treated. She saw their pain and mistreatment caused by the people that took control of them. This inequality was caused mostly by the men in their lives. The novella shows the expectations placed upon Esperanza and what it was like for her to grow up on Mango Street. She is similar to some of the women that live on Mango Street but she is also quite different. She has certain qualities that allow her to learn from the mistakes made by the women around her so that she can fulfill her dreams and live the life that she wants. Esperanza had similarities and differences between the women in the novella but it is her differences that made her strong. "She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow. I wonder if she made the best with what she got or was she sorry because she couldn't be all the things she wanted to be. Esperanza. Unlike them, she realized that she could use her writing as a means of escape rather than having to get married. Esperanza stands up to people trying to control her or her friends whenever possible. An example of this is when Tito takes Sally's keys. Esperanza has been injured by Tito before when he pushed her into a fire hydrant in an attempt to flirt with her. But she still stood up to him in order to help Sally. She may have been afraid that she was strong and independent. Esperanza is also unique because she did not want to get married and share a house. She wanted a house of her own that she could do with as she pleased. The other women in the book always live with someone else. But Esperanza wanted to have a life, and a home, of her own
