In society having power and being male gives one respect and makes one more desirable than others, whether they would be desired for relationships or economic needs. However, these people with higher status will often as shown throughout history treat their partners of lesser status as less than a person. In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston, with the characters Janie Starks, Joe Starks, Logan Killicks, and Tea Cake, the history how women were treated, and all the way to how women were treated in current times show examples of people with power taking advantage of people of lower power. As demonstrated in the text, “She tore off the kerchief from her head and let down her plentiful hair. The weight, the length, and the glory was there. After a while the people finished their celebration and Janie went on home. Before she slept that night she burnt up every one of her head rags and went about the house next morning with her hair in one thick braid swinging well below her waist”(87-89). Janie's hair initially demonstrated her strength, but when she meets Joe Starks and is forced to wear head rags, she gets bound and loses her freedom. When Starks dies, Janie is relieved that he is no longer alive and that she may once again express herself freely. Janie's head rags and the cruel treatment she received from Joe represent slavery in the past, when African Americans were treated as second-class citizens with no freedom. In contrast, when Joe dies she meets Tea Cake, who is impoverished, but with whom she enjoys a happier existence. An example that represents the difference in Jainies treatment, ”Janie woke next morning by feeling Tea Cake almost kissing her breath away. This is so because having an entitlement mentally and feeling like you can get away with anything can result in abusive conduct. There are, however, certain exceptions. Because she recognized a wealthy and well-known man, Kirstin Anderson only wanted the money and chose to claim that she was touched in order to obtain it. Because males are frequently portrayed as rapists or abusers, women frequently seek out high-status men in order to extract money from them by alleging that they physically mistreated them.
