A Cloud of Oppression Experiencing the torment of a label is difficult, especially if it is given to your whole family. In the memoir Red Scarf Girl, set in the time of the Cultural Revolution, being within the upper middle class was frowned upon and proletarians were seen as the leaders of society. The label of black class status tainted the bourgeoisie, including the Jiang family, with torture, ridicule, and incrimination by others influenced by the governmentally coercive ways of Communism. Political oppression was visible everywhere within China, affecting neighborhoods, families and even children.
Before today, I didn’t know much about Georgia O’Keeffe and I wasn’t familiar with any of her paintings. After reading through the section, I realized how much I admired this artist that I’d just learned about and how undervalued her art was, or maybe how little she’s spoken of nowadays, compared to other artists. Her landscape paintings all contain a very distinct look to them that make them seem very original. The fact that she makes a place like New Mexico seem like it’s got breathtaking scenery, when in reality it’s mostly rugged and dry looking, is astonishing to me.

I have created an art piece which links ot the artist Jackson Pollock and Joanne Boon Thomas. It is a painting of space with a cluster of neublas and stars, however what makes it unique is that there is an eclipse in the middle of the canvas which is elevated from the canvas, this gives it a slightly 3D feeling that you would get when looking at a planet. The meaning behind my work is to show how galaxies can be lightyears across but still be tethered to each other, this links into together and apart as it demonstrates how even though the planets, stars and nebulas are so far apart from each other, they are all still bound to each other by gravity, and the galaxy is only called a galaxy because all these planets, stars and nebulas are together,
