This sense of personal rights among the African American women impairs their couple relationships. From an early age I have always had an interest in the legal system, as a child of divorcees the legal system has always had an impact on my life. I have always dreamed about being a family lawyer and have hoped that through hard work and dedication I could make my dream a reality; enter law school, successfully complete the bar exam and utilize my knowledge of the law to help those who may otherwise be left in the cold by the legal system. The Mythos of African-American Gender Identity The concept of gender has long determined standards of appropriate and acceptable behavior. Intersectionality, however, offers an explanation to the double standards African-Americans face due to how masculinity and femininity are perceived when applied to them. The social norms imposed upon African-American people and families develop different standards of masculinity & femininity and sexual stereotypes of African-American men and women, and often misunderstand the common family dynamic. African-American men and women have been subjected to many stereotypes that assume and overstate the nature of their ethnicity.

While identity focuses on uniqueness such as how an individual is different from and similar to others, diversity focuses on the range of the difference and uniqueness such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, among others. Diversity should be seen as source of strength. However, it can also be a source of violence, oftentimes by those who fear or dislike difference. In the best light diversity is foundation for peacebuilding – since it enables us to draw strength and be respectful of difference. Identity and diversity are linked.
