Through the debate, we learn about the history of Rome culture, the Roman society, the view of women in the Roman society, and the roles they had. In 195 B.C.E., Rome was facing economic oppression from the war. Because of the monetary hardship, the Oppian law was passed in hopes to decrease conflict between the rich and the poor. At this time in Roman society, gender role distinctions and class distinctions existed, and gender roles greatly affected laws and the government. Women were considered weak and viewed as prizes of men that determined their status and place in society.
For instance, the men were hunters or went to war to prohibit anything lethal to their families. On the other hand, the women were farmers and took care of their children while cooking as well. Moreover, “Only men became Mandan chiefs, but both genders took part in storytelling, artwork and music, and traditional medicine”(source A). Women actually got recognition for arts and sacred ceremonies( source D).Similar to children know they did have dolls and other games. However, the children did get to play, but not as much because they had more chores (source A).
Although the two city-states of Greece carried different motives they were both thought of as thinkers who loved beauty and multiple forms of art. Culture is one thing the two city states seemed to differ in greatly. Athens was thought to be a more progressive city-state. It’s known for art, architecture, drama, science advancements, philosophy, as well as literature. Though they were advanced in all of these fields they were behind on the rights of women.

But from current roles of women being equal to those of men, how women stood in ancient society significantly differs and contrast with ours today. Throughout history, the role and significance of women were always outweighed by the dominance and influence of men.
