Would you ever want to live in a place where having a deviation is not allowed? Or where woman’s rights are basically nonexistent? Well this is where David Strorm is living in John Wyndhams book, “The Chrysalids”. This terrible place is called Waknuk. Primarily, it is ruled by religion. Next, you cannot look anything different than everyone else, and or have a deviation. Finally, Woman’s rights are basically non-existent. All these topics clearly give a good example on why Waknuk is a terrible place to live. Firstly, In Waknuk, the town is run by religion. This means that you cannot be your own person, also it means that you have to be the true image of God. The true image of God is; “1 body, 1 head, 2 arms, 2 legs; that each arm should be …show more content…

6 toes, 6 fingers, 3 hand, etc. If you do have a deviation, you will be kicked out, or killed. While eating dinner with David and his parents, David mentions “I could have managed it all right by myself if I’d had another hand” Says David to his father Joseph. (Wyndham #26). With David mentioning this, he got beat by his father Joseph and made David pray for forgiveness. At this time for David, Waknuk is not a good place to live. This shows that even just wishing for a third hand, you will get beaten very bad, and it also shows that having it will be far a lot worse. In addition to this incident, they made Sofie leave Waknuk when someone found out she had a sixth toe. “Mummy said we’d have to go if anyone found out”. Said Sofie to David explaining that she would have to leave Waknuk if they found out that she had a sixth toe. (Wyndham #46). The significance of this quote is that they would make Sofie leave Waknuk just because she is a little bit different than everyone else. Furthermore, Aunt Harriet wanted to say that David’s sister was her daughter because her baby had a deviant, but Joseph Strorm found out. “When they broke the news to me the next day that my Aunt Harriet’s body had been found in the river, no one mentioned a baby”. Says David. (Wyndham #74). This explains that having a baby with a deviation could get you and the baby killed. …show more content…

They do not treat woman fairly to men. While at the dinner table, Joseph Strorm beat David really badly when David mentioned; “I could have managed it right by myself if I had another hand”. (Wyndham #26). His mother simply froze and everyone in the room looked at David’s father, Joseph Strorm. This demonstrates that David’s mother had no chance to stop David’s father from beating his son, David because she has little to no rights. When women are pregnant they are not allowed to talk about it because just in case the baby had a deviation. “One did not dare to announce a birth, until the child had been officially examined and approved.” Says David explaining that woman did not announce that they are pregnant. (Wyndham #67). This displays that woman have no right to talk about them being pregnant because if anyone found out that the baby had a deviation. The baby and the mother have a chance to be kicked out, or even killed. Aunt Harriet’s baby would have been taken away if it was not normal like the others, and she would have been kicked out. “They will take my baby like they did with the others.” Aunt Harriet said slowly and wearily. (Wyndham #71). This indicates that she no right and sterilized that she would have been kicked out and the baby will be taken away, this also shows that it has been done to other people and it would not be the first time it would happen. It is pretty sad to see that your baby would be taken
